NO. 09-2-4 - WHEREAS, the 2009-2010 budget proposed by the Superintendent calls for the elimination of the Strings and Band program;
WHEREAS the Cranston School Committee strongly supports the Strings and Band program and wishes to continue the program;
BE IT RESOLVED, that a subcommittee be formed to investigate alternate funding for the Strings and Band program;
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this subcommittee shall consist of two members of the School Committee and two parent representatives appointed by the Chairman of the School Committee, an elementary principal, Mark Colozzi, Christine Harrington, and a Central Administrator appointed by the Superintendent.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this subcommittee shall report back to the School Committee at the April work session.

NO. 09-2-7 - RESOLVED, Whereas, there may be more qualified individuals who will apply for current positions, and Whereas, certain positions became available after the teacher selection of July 30, 2008 and more senior teachers may elect to occupy these positions under Article XVI of the Collective Bargaining Agreement, and
Whereas, funding for certain positions is not assured for the 2009-2010 school year, and as a result, more senior teachers could elect to take a current position, and
Whereas, positions occupied by retirees must be posted each year, and
Whereas, there may be changes in student distribution, and as a result, more senior teachers may take a current position, and
Whereas, positions must now be made available for more senior teachers who are scheduled to return from leave, and
Whereas, the specific reason for the termination is that funding for certain positions is not assured for the 2009-2010 school year and, as a result, more senior teachers could elect to take a current position. Also as a result of pending legislation before the Rhode Island General Assembly, the requirement to have certified nurse teachers may be eliminated.
Whereas, because of these concerns, and in accordance with Title 16 of the General Laws of the State of Rhode Island, the Superintendent has recommended that the employment of certain teachers be terminated at the end of the 2008-2009 school year,
Whereas, the Superintendent has sent prior notice to said teachers informing them of the specific reasons for their termination, and
Whereas, the School Committee has provided said teachers with the opportunity to be heard in Executive Session regarding their termination,
Be it RESOLVED that said teachers be terminated at the close of the school year under provisions of Title 16 of the General Laws of the State of Rhode Island, and
Be it further RESOLVED that the Superintendent notify those teachers of the School Committee's action to terminate their employment.

NO. 09-2-12 - RESOLVED, that the 2009-2010 Operating Budget, as recommended by the Superintendent, be approved.
POLICY AND PROGRAM
NO. 09-2-13 - RESOLVED, that at the recommendation of the Superintendent, the following Conferences/Field Trips of Long Duration be authorized:
1. Norma Cole, Principal of Western Hills Middle School, to travel to New Orleans from April 3, 2009 to April 7, 2009 to attend the NAESP Conference (National Association of Elementary Principals) at no cost to the Cranston Public Schools. Please note: Mrs. Cole is President of NAESP, which covers grades K - 8 (including middle school). The conference expenses are covered by RIASP funds.
2. Richard Abruzzini, teacher of Finance at the Cranston Area Career & Technical Center, to travel to Chicago, IL from April 7, 2009 to April 11, 2009 to attend the NBEA Annual Convention (National Business Education Association), at no cost to the Cranston Public Schools. Substitutes/expenses paid out of Perkins Grant.

TABLED RESOLUTION
NO. 09-1-2 - RESOLVED, that effective March 1, 2009, the Cranston Public Schools will charge non-free or reduced eligible students $1.00 per meal for breakfast in all non-Title 1 schools. The school administration will also work to have school affiliated organizations, such as PTO's and extracurricular activity groups, operate school breakfast programs in schools with low participation. Such organizations will work with the school food service director to comply with all government laws and regulations and shall receive any income from the breakfast sales in that school, after the school food service program has been reimbursed for its costs. If a school affiliated organization is chosen to operate a school breakfast program, the School Committee will be notified.
