RIPEC Releases Education in Rhode Island 2008 Report

The Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council (RIPEC) have released their Education in Rhode Island 2008 report. This report examines student performance in conjunction with a number of factors that have an impact on education in the Ocean State and was featured in the Providence Journal article RIPEC: Money won't fix schools.

The article in the Providence Journal quotes various statistics from the RIPEC report and states "it reinforces RIPEC's standing message that lagging student performance does not reflect the size of the investment." Findings in the report which were cited in the article include:

  • Rhode Island has the fifth highest per-pupil expenditure in the nation: $12,609 per student in 2005-06
  • Rhode Island students' scores on national exams, the SAT and the National Assessment of Educational Progress, fall below the national average
  • The national average expenditure per pupil is $9,241
  • RIPEC projects that the state's per-pupil expenditure will reach $16,444 in the 2009-2010 fiscal year
